Public holidays in Australia are declared on a state and territory basis, so they may differ from state to state.
Shops, banks, offices and schools are usually closed, or have unusual opening hours on public holidays, so keep an eye out for them.
Australian employees usually have the right to take a public holiday off work with regular pay, or if they choose to work, they will usually receive a higher wage for the day.
